Docs advice when I had a back strain awhile back.


Walking. Walking is one of the best exercises when you have a sore back. It's low impact, and uses all those back muscles. A lot of what you feel as back pain, is your back muscles going into spasm. So walking gets some blood flowing to them, so they warm up and loosen up a bit. Lying around not doing anything just keeps those muscles tight.
